23rd October 2021
English Day was celebrated on 23rd October 2021 by St. Teresa’s Institute of Education from 9 – 10:30 am on Google Meet. The entire event was co-ordinated by Dr. Cerena D’Cunha. A total of 55 attendees were present. The English Day Celebration aimed to entertain and inform us about the history, culture and achievements associated with the language. The event also celebrated the birthday of the famous Indian writer, R.K. Narayan, and honoured his contributions towards development of the language in the Indian context.
The English Day celebration began with a prayer service invoking the blessings of the Almighty. Ms. Upassana Sanghvi carried forward by orienting us to the life of R. K. Narayan. It was followed by a speech on English Language Day by Ms. Salwa Jumai. The joint compering of Ms. Pearl Gomes and Ms. Ruth D’Mello enlivened the attendees and set the pace for the entire event. They kept everyone entertained by stating interesting facts about English language and asking fun icebreaker questions and tongue twisters throughout the event. Students, from time to time, were called on to recite poems, some being penned by the students themselves. Ms. Tanvi Pitale, Sr. Cinthiya Bavighar and Sr. Elvina D’Souza showcased their melodious voices by singing classic English songs, with love as the theme. Ms. Romany D’Mello and Ms. Simentha D’Mello spiced things up by playing guessing games wherein one had to guess the name of the specific English movie or English book. This was followed by Ms. Upassana and Ms. Srishti Nangalia making us wear our thinking caps by conducting a quiz based on English Day. Ms. Riya Coutinho brought the celebration to a close by proposing the vote of thanks. It was soon followed by the screening of the national anthem and the college anthem. The event came to an end with Dr. Cerena D’Cunha expressing a few words.
The event was a fun-filled roller coaster that helped us to appreciate the English language and made us aware of the progress of the language in the Indian scene.
